LoRa (short for Long Range) is a low-power, long-range wireless communication technology designed primarily for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. Developed by Cycleo and acquired by Semtech, it enables devices to send small amounts of data over significant distances while consuming minimal power.

Key Features

• Long Range: Can transmit data over 2–5 km in dense urban settings and up to 10–15 km in clear, rural environments.
• Low Power Consumption: End-node devices can operate on small battery cells for several years (up to 10 years in many cases) because they remain in a deep sleep state when not transmitting.
• Low Bandwidth: Optimized for small data payloads (like sensor readings, status updates, or telemetry) rather than high-throughput data like video or audio streaming.
• Unlicensed Frequencies: Operates on sub-GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) radio bands (such as 868 MHz in Europe, 915 MHz in North America, and 433 MHz in Asia).
